This line runs from Ishikawa to Niigata prefectures and is operated under a third-sector system. It runs east-west through Toyama Prefecture.
The line has 24 stations, covers a distance of 100.1 km, and is electrified.
Originally part of the Hokuriku Main Line, it was separated in 2015. Of those lines, those running mainly in Toyama Prefecture were taken over.
The name of the line was chosen after the public was asked to submit an entry, which was submitted by a housewife in Takaoka City.
A sightseeing train called "13,000 Shaku Monogatari" runs on this line. The name "13,000 Shaku" is derived from the difference in elevation between the Tateyama mountain range, which is 3,000 meters above sea level, and Toyama Bay, which is a deep sea with a load of 1,000 meters.
The 13,000 Shaku Monogatari is a restaurant train, and passengers can travel on the train while eating delicious seafood.
