On the JR Joetsu Line, there is a station where you have to dive the deepest tunnel in Japan to get down to the down platform.
The up platform is above ground, but the down platform is located deep in a tunnel under the ground. There is a height difference of 81 meters between the up platform and the down platform, and you have to climb down 462 steps. For this reason, this station is called "Japan's largest mole station.
Why did this station have to be built like this?
Originally, when the Joetsu Line was opened in 1931, it was a single track line that was used only as an up line. The station building is located at the entrance of the Shimizu Tunnel along the line.
When the line was converted to a double-track line in 1967, a new tunnel was dug for the down line, and it went much deeper underground. The downstairs platform was installed in the tunnel.
Therefore, it takes more than 10 minutes to get to the platform after passing through the ticket gate. There are benches in the middle of the stairs where you can take a rest.
There is also a lodge near the station where you can stay overnight on an experimental basis. It is gaining popularity because even beginners can easily experience camping.
