今回はちょっと難しかったようです。確かに単語が難しいかも……「trudged」を「explored」とかにした方がよかったかなあ。
路線自体は分かったようなので本人は満足そうでした。

This line is a JR Hokkaido line. It is nicknamed the "Hanasaki Line.
In 1896, in order to select a route for the construction of this line, a professor of the university trudged the route from Asahikawa to Kushiro. It was a great hardship to walk through the uncultivated land where insects were flying all over the place.
As a result, this route was opened to traffic in 1907. At that time, when this professor actually rode this route, he was laboriously told, "You must have been bored for 12 hours," to which he replied, "When I came here before, it took me 20 days. When I think back to those days, it seems like a waste to pass through this place in only 12 hours," he replied.
The line is 443 km long, and the entire line is non-electrified, with Kiha 261 and Kiha 40 series trains running on the line.
Among Hokkaido's railroads, there have been many accidents involving deer entering the tracks. As countermeasures against contact, we have installed an ultrasonic alarm that emits ultrasonic waves to prevent deer from approaching, and we have also installed boards that light up when the train's lights are on.
